Day 0-2: This Is Fun! (and I’m not even being sarcastic)

Mile 20, Day 2

Kerrie and I finally made it, we’re on the PCT! WOOHOO!

PRE-PCT: Packing up before the trip turned out to be a bigger day than we thought, but hey, we got it done (by 2:30am)

We started our trip by flying to San Diego. We surfed (mostly fell), cheered for Caitlin, Michael, and Diane as they ran a half marathon, and ate a respectable amount of ice cream. Thanks for hosting us Caitlin and Michael!

DAY 0: We ended up postponing our start by one day because of a big storm & wind system that was coming through. We had a (much-needed) Creative Day, which was obviously the only alternative to starting a 5 month hike. We painted backpack decorations, baked 3 different desserts, played tennis, and continued consuming large amounts of of pasta.

Day 1 (3/29): We started from the southern terminus of the PCT at the Mexico/US Border at 9am and seriously had the best day. What is notoriously a really hot and dry section (with a 20 mile water carry) was cloudy and cool with some rain showers. It was green, lush, and not very desert-like! We met people who were also starting the PCT throughout the day, and our hiking group grew. By the time we got to camp we had 9 people and just enough room to squeeze in all of the tents and avoid the red ant hill. We had dinner, a stretching session, played the card game Spoons, and were tucked into our beds by 8pm, what a life 🙂

Starting at the terminus!

Day 2 (3/30): Another great day with the hiking train (about 7 of us hiking together). We spent the morning avoiding touching any and all plants until we figured out which ones were poison oak (they were younger and greener than I’m used to seeing). We had our first serious climb out of Hauser Creek and I was happy with how good I felt. Kerrie and I are taking it easy on the mileage at the beginning, and we’re both feeling good! It’s nice not to feel just utterly beat down when we get into camp- we’ve learned from our overly-ambitious past-backpacking trips, finally! We rolled in to Lake Morena and our first ‘town’. We ate lunch and dinner at the malt shop, did our first resupply, and even rinsed off in a campground shower! We’re staying at a campground that has a designated PCT section and our group is growing! It’s kind of like the first day of school when everyone is really excited to make friends, and we’ve met hikers from England, Germany, and France. Honestly things are just really going great, it’s been a blast.
